Personal Yoga Practice (PYP) Program Details

It is my honor and pleasure to continue to offer this very personalized yoga program. My first round of clients finished this program in Nov/Dec 2020, and each has really taken their practice to heart, finding steady progress towards reaching their goals and enjoying the deep benefits of yoga.

This blog post is to explain the nature of a personal yoga practice and to discuss details of the program itself.

What is a personal yoga practice?

It’s how to make yoga your own, practicing independently and freely. Taking time away from the outer world, tuning inwards, and developing your body and mind through asana and pranayama (the poses and breathing of yoga).

  • It is the difference between following along with a yoga video, and *feeling* your body and choosing the movements you need today.

  • It aims to be a BALANCING practice - this means the practice doesn’t have to be strenuous or leave you covered in sweat - rather it should leave you feeling refreshed and whole.

  • It is a place for exploration and building self-reliance, self-knowledge, and self-trust.

By practicing without someone telling you what to do or feel, you create space for internal dialogue and connection with yourself. You can use this time however you see fit - perhaps to develop specific qualities like flexibility, strength, or balance between muscle groups, or work on a specific asana (pose). The choice is always yours.

In order to do this safely and effectively, you need to have experience and knowledge of the foundational aspects of yoga - how to safely perform the poses, what the effects are of the poses, and how to adjust them to get what you need. And that is what I aim to teach in this 4-week program.

A personal yoga practice is truly a gift you give to yourself, and I hope to share this gift with you!

What is the foundation of the practice?

The practice is based on a set of core asana - sitting poses, standing poses, supine poses, inverted poses, twists, and so forth. Explicit practice of these core poses develops a foundational stability in our bodies, which will lead to continuous improvements in physical and mental postures.

What is the program being offered?

The program involves working together to create and develop *your* personal yoga practice, specifically for reaching your goals.

It is comprised of four (4) hour-long lessons over webcam (with me!), a weekly personalized practice plan along with a custom-video to aid in your daily practice. The video will be emailed the day after your lesson. You are welcome to message me throughout the week via email/IG messenger; I am here to support you.

A key part of this program is daily practice - this is essential for your success in this program. Our mental and physical posture is something we need to work on every single day, so please, only join this program if you can make this commitment to yourself and to me. I expect students to commit to a daily 15 minute practice session during the 4-week program.

What are lessons like?

The first week's lesson is introductory and aimed at identifying your comfort and ability level. We will discuss your experience with yoga, your goals, and will include a full body practice to feel out different movements and identify strengths & opportunities for improvement.

Subsequent lessons will be targeting your areas for improvement and building on your existing skillset.

How should I prepare for my first lesson?

Please prepare a place for your yoga practice, including:

  • webcam, angled to show your full body

  • a yoga mat

  • a pair of yoga blocks and strap (optional: but recommended)

Recommend that you don’t eat at least 2 hours before your lesson, avoid heavy workouts the day prior, and wash your feet and hands.

How do I sign up? What if I have more questions?
